MUSIC TO MY FINGERS The Expanding Music Genre
WILD WILD WORLD GTA Goes Wild in Liberty City

MUSIC TO MY FINGERS
As witnessed with Rock Band, SingStar and of course, Guitar Hero, music-based video games have reached an all-time high in popularity in terms of pop culture, social gaming and game sales. What's more, the 8-Bit movement reminds us that video games and music will never die. Given the momentum, what will be the next next-gen innovation in this genre of games?

If you thought Rock Band was amazing, think again. For those out there who were never musically inclined to pick up a real guitar, and for those not technically inclined enough to learn the clicking version but know how to put on a good show, Air Guitar Hero is the game for you. Having obtained a license from Activision and boasting 5 licensed tracks, this "youth electronic item" could put a whole new twist on the Air Guitar championships of yesteryear. And it will cost you $30.

So maybe Mozart doesn't have the same sex appeal as Bon Jovi and "Moonlight Sonata" isn't fit for mosh-pitting, but Piano Hero will actually help you learn how to play an instrument. Synthesia is a freeware open-source program that plays like Guitar Hero. In the same manner players strum and click their Guitar Hero peripherals, a Piano Hero player hits corresponding keys to get the right note. When will we see Nyko peripherals and keyboard customization kits? And if you were hoping for an Orchestra Hero, Nintendo is already on that one.

WILD WILD WORLD
For the fourth installment of the much anticipated and highly controversial GTA franchise, Rockstar has built and maintained momentum in the press. Rockstar has released a number of trailers and branded content to appease the fans and hopefully sway potential consumers into the purchase funnel with these integrated advertising efforts.

To preempt the launch of their new microsite, three viral different types of posters were posted all throughout New York. Two of these posters are "wanted" posters for in-game criminals, while the third poster was a police department propaganda piece. Building off the fact that the game takes place in a city eerily similar to New York, these pieces provide some context for the game and simultaneously build excitement for it. The posters have been picked up by Flickr and several gaming and nonindustry blogs.

In an out-of-home effort, Rockstar posted a massive wallscape in New York. One seemingly nongaming blogger, who lives nearby the placement, documented the progression of the posting. This was eventually picked up my several gaming and advertising blogs, providing an unexpected increase in word-of-mouth PR value.

Leveraging their fanbase in a nontraditional effort, Rockstar created a video showing artists painting their box art. Box art, by any gamers standards, is a big deal and to do this in a way that gets gamer's and potential purchasers excited is both innovative and relevant to the brand.
