EA's latest venture in sports gaming brings us a step closer to reality. With the popularity and pervasiveness of the Tony Hawk franchise, EA intends to gain some of the market share in the extreme sports gaming genre by publishing a new title that is more realistic and akin to real skating than any of its competitors.
|

With HD graphics and the amazing ability to record your videos and post to an online community, Skate offers a refreshing perspective on skating games. It's so refreshing, in fact, that aArtist and video director Timothy Saccenti and his editor recreated Guy Mariano's legendary part from Girl Skateboards' "Mouse" video by editing himself playing EA's Skate game.
Leveraging the community aspect of the game and the technology that allows people to share their gaming experiences, games are evolving into a blank canvas for artists and gamers alike. Here is one of the most popular videos shared since the game launched. Having reached Digg's top ten articles at one point last week, it's worth noting that it has reached many people outside of just the hardcore Skate community.

The phenomenon of the Wii and its innovative motion-sensitive controls is so prevalent that Nintendo has essentially expanded the casual gaming market. In addition to the Wii, there has been another trend expanding the casual gaming market that has gone under the radar: mobile gaming. [CNETnews.com reports "the North American market for casual games is expected to grow from an estimated $281 million in sales this year to $1.15 billion in 2011."]

With games that focus on ease of play and access, fun in short amounts of time and characteristically lower costs of production, where is the market going now? Meet the ZeeMote, a Bluetooth NunChuck mobile clone that takes your mobile gaming experience away from numbered keypads and into a more console-like experience. While not being motion sensitive, the wireless controller has the potential for multiplayer games and consuming other forms of entertainment.
Another innovation that actually brings in a motion sensitive control mechanism is the Japan-only DoCoMo's D9041. In the Tokyo Highway Battle racing game, users twist the handset like a steering wheel to control driving. In Skateboard Dash, the phone can be tilted to control the board's speed and direction. Just think about the possibilities of GTA IV for your motion-sensitive action...

Even though Halo 3 sucks and has sold more than $300 billion in revenue during its first week, the popularity of Halo is undeniable even in the ranks of religion. Although it's intuitive to think video games are born from the minds of an antichrist, church leaders of Protestant denominations across the nation are opening their doors to host Halo 3 nights as a means to reach the elusive teen boy audience.
|

Although the reasoning has caused debate between political figures, religious peers and social activists alike, it's hard to doubt the penetrating influence of one of the best-selling franchises of all time. Despite being used as a religious recruiting tool and as a topic of religious discussion, Halo has broken new ground for video games. While the jury will likely be out for a while on this one, I'll leave you with my last few words of advice: "Thou shall now game."
